into the wild – 2007

i have seen the movie, nunz has read the book.

how can i tell you about this movie ya… it was so astonishing and astounding for me. astonishing for his idea, astounding for his courage.

what idea? what courage?

this one:

chris: No, man. Alaska, Alaska. I’m gonna be all the way out there, all the way fucking out there. Just on my own. You know, no fucking watch, no map, no axe, no nothing. No nothing. Just be out there. Just be out there in it. You know, big mountains, rivers, sky, game. Just be out there in it, you know? In the wild.

Wayne: In the wild.

Chris: Just Wild!

Wayne: Yeah. What are you doing when we’re there? Now you’re in the wild, what are we doing?

Chris: You’re just living, man. You’re just there, in that moment, in that special place and time. Maybe when I get back, I can write a book about my travels.

Wayne: Yeah, why not?

Chris: You know, about getting out of this sick society. Society!

Wayne: Society! Society!

Chris: Society, man! You know, society! Cause, you know what I don’t understand? I don’t understand why people, why every fucking person is so bad to each other so fucking often. It doesn’t make sense to me. Judgment. Control. All that, the whole spectrum. Well, it just…

Wayne: What “people” we talking about?

Chris: You know, parents, hypocrites, politicians, pricks.

That idea!

and his courage to do what he thinks he’s right, what he want to do. yes, he goes to Alaska and into the wild.

a 22-years-old- Christopher McCandless (Chris), freshly graduated from college with a promising future and career, chose instead to walk out of his privileged life and into the wild in search of adventure and the meaning of happiness.

for me, he’s a naive idealist, a rebellious 1990’s Thoreau, a fearless risk-taker and a heroic adventure who inspires a lot of person in his way to Alaska. and i never saw him as another lost American son or a tragic figure who wrestled with the precarious balance between man and nature, not even a glim in mind.

he was born on Feb 12, 1968.

yes, it is 12 February. i repeat, 12 February.

since the beginning of the movies until the end, i have no idea how many beautiful quotes he quoted. as if in every turning of his life, in all his way of life, he always find a right and perfect quote to describe what he feel, he think. and DANG! that shocked me. that behavior reminds me of a person. someone whose willing to quote a lot of phrases, wisdom words, and songs just to balance her life and her emotion. guess who. 🙂

and his naive idea, his found of every Thoreau’s book and of course the most glorious one “give me truth”, when he said, “I’m going to paraphrase Thoreau here… rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, than fairness… give me truth.” haha… it makes me laugh, ehm… crazily perhaps 😛 .

a great, good and right quote even though a cruel one but think that only a few person who can bear the torture of a truth. am i one of that few people? i dare to say no and still working on it.

back on the story,

yes, he chose his own way to be a fearless risk-taker and hitchhikes into the wild on Alaska rather than maintain his bright future and career. many ups and down, burn all his money, left his car, never called his family, giving his last 25 cent to an old man rather than using it to call his sister. chose not to involved in love relationship with a beautiful young lady. learn a lot of new things, any special and interested thing he ever imagined. that’s what he deal off.

and he made it! yay!

finally he spend his xxx day (cmiiw, this counting day is one that i missed, all i remember is it’s been a two years diary) in a hill an live in wilderness with no phone, with no money, and no friends.

and when the day is coming, the day when he finally figure that living in wilderness without obligation, without technology, with nothing and just live, is possible (and also as he planed that he will return in spring after spending his winter time on that hill), he decide to return but unfortunately the stream he crossed in the snow has become an impassable raging torrent and that he’s trapped.

dan yeah, he got trapped, with no preparation at all, suffering and starving, failed in having a rhino (cmiiw) skinned off. and he starves to death, with a very tiny-little mistakes he got a mis perception of a fruit, a poisonous fruit and that bring him to the end line.

but finally he understand that “happiness only real when shared.”

and that was the most idiotic thing for realizing about happiness just when you will pass away.

why did i say “idiotic”? it just that, it’s often happen to us when we realize the most important thing on a very last moment. it’s sad. i hate it. but it’s often happened. that’s why i said idiot.

and now, what can i say? i have give a spoiler about this movie. do i feel sorry? er… no! it is a great movie about a journey to a self-knowledge. it brought me to a lot of question and understanding. superb!

do i cry? ya, you bet lah! of kors donk! like i’ve said before, that his idea, his courage, his idealist, his gut… that is amazing and i’d love take a very deep bow for him.

to me he’s such a big rebel, ones with almost the same idea with me, how suck it is some obligation, roles, manners, politician, parents, society but he had gut, while none in me. not even a little rebel i could put as my name tag.

salute to you. you are a naive idealist but you do inspire a lot of person on your way and that makes me able to see what you are going through and what you are going to do and where i wanna be.

Christopher McCandless a.k.a Alex Supertramp may you Rest In Peace.
